Amplify the urgent need for climate action now

In the myth, Icarus defied warnings and flew too close to the sun—ultimately falling from the sky. The myth serves as a cautionary tale against excessive pride and over-ambition, offering lessons we can apply to respecting our Earth’s natural limits, including the consequences of fossil fuel pollution.

Imagine if Icarus were born today, 2025. What can his life look like if we make the right decisions now for his home, health and livelihood? What kind of life can the children of today inherit if we rise together to make the critical changes against fossil fuels and planet-warming pollution now?

Envision a future worth fighting for – resilient cities, clean energy solutions, and healthy thriving communities for the children of today. Tell the story of a generation able to live in a cooler, safer world.

Your original artwork can help draw attention to the issues we face ahead of COP30.

The winning artist will have their work featured across CLEO digital spaces and receive a $500 monetary prize.

We Are Icarus Contest Guidelines

By entering the contest, you agree to these official guidelines, which constitute a binding contract between you and The CLEO Institute.

1. Brand Background

Founded in 2010, The CLEO Institute is a women-led, nonpartisan nonprofit organization exclusively dedicated to climate education, advocacy, and engagement. CLEO works with government, business, academic, and community leaders to advance resilient and just climate solutions.

Through art, education, and advocacy, The CLEO Institute empowers individuals and communities to take meaningful action on the climate crisis.

2. Campaign General Information

To spotlight the urgent need for climate action, The CLEO Institute is launching the “We Are Icarus” Art Contest on (September 21 – October 31, 2025).

Within Greek mythology, Icarus defied warnings and fell from the sky. Today, we once again find ourselves looking through Icarus’s eyes, ignoring the warnings of climate change. But unlike Icarus, we have the power to change course. By raising our voices, signing The Icarus Petition, and demanding bold action at COP30, we can secure a livable future.

We invite artists and climate activists to share their stories and perspectives through visual art. Submissions should capture how you’ve witnessed the world evolve, how climate change has impacted you personally, and the hope you carry for the future.

We are all Icarus.
